More issues currently in the news highlights the importance of having a robust asbestos management plan in place. In one of several cases, a North East hospital trust was recently fined for asbestos failures in 2012, after contractors were exposed to asbestos fibres whilst carrying out work.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation into work carried out in a Walsall school in 2009 found that no pre-refurbishment asbestos survey had been carried out. Pupils, staff and joiners were exposed to asbestos, leading to Staffordshire County Council and a building firm being recently fined.
It is now hoped that a school in Caerphilly county, Wales, closed in October 2012 due to asbestos contamination, would re-open, after the HSE announced it is an “essentially uncontaminated school” after new tests.
