Landlords Urged to Remove Unsafe Cladding

27th September 2018

The Communities Secretary, James Brokenshire has stated that private sector landlords have a ‘moral imperative’ to swiftly remove unsafe cladding from buildings.  The government will now consider what further steps may be appropriate to enforce this, and companies could face being fined or barred from accessing other government schemes.

A letter has been written to approximately 60 building owners and developers, explaining the actions they must take to avoid penalties.  Some building owners have already responded quickly to the government’s request.

The government has already committed to covering the cost of replacing cladding on social housing blocks and is urging private sector landlords to follow suit, and not to leave leaseholders to cover the costs. Increased focus continues on all areas of fire risk management, following the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017.

Despite the fact that fire and rescue services are working with building owners to ensure residents are safe in their homes, there are concerns that progress being made to reach this point is too slow.

The specialist fire team at the S2 Partnership can attend site to review all areas of fire safety management.  The review consolidates the planning, organisation, control and monitoring of preventative and protective fire safety measures of a premises, and always takes into account the individual nature of each building.
