Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974: 40 Years on

14th February 2014

Since the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 came into force, the number of fatalities from work-related accidents in Great Britain has reduced significantly.

The latest figures, for 2012/2013, revealed 148 fatalities in the workplace, a dramatic reduction from the 651 recorded in 1974.

Despite the fall in fatal injuries and overall downward trend, the reality is that people are still losing their lives and thousands are suffering from work-related health problems. These figures come as stark reminder of why the occupational health and safety profession remains more important than ever in helping to manage real risks in the workplace.
