Fire Alarms Installed at Ice Hotel

9th January 2014

Sweden’s world-famous ICEHOTEL – constructed entirely of ice – was recently ordered to install fire alarms.

Located in the north Swedish town of Jukkasjarvi, the hotel melts in the spring and is rebuilt every winter.

Having been told that construction of the building could not continue until at least one fire alarm had been installed on the premises, the hotel worked with the local fire authority to ensure work was completed ahead of its December opening.

Beatrice Karlsson, Hotel spokeswoman, said: “We were a little surprised at first, but there are things that can actually catch fire, like pillows, sleeping bags or reindeer skins. To us the most important concern is the safety of our clients, so we will comply.”

With the ice constantly shifting, installing the alarms proved particularly challenging. However, soon after installation, the alarm was triggered – reportedly by a guest smoking in a cleaning closet.
