New Surveillance Camera Code of Practice

28th June 2013

Under the Home Office’s new surveillance camera code of practice, due to come into force in summer 2013, public bodies in England and Wales such as local authorities and the police will be expected to follow guidelines to ensure that their surveillance camera systems are used proportionately and effectively.

Other organisations using surveillance camera systems are also encouraged to adopt the new code voluntarily.

The 12 guiding principles to be followed introduce a philosophy of ‘surveillance by consent’, ensuring CCTV and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (APNR) technology is used only where relevant and required.
