Working Safely at Height – Don’t Walk a Tightrope

15th May 2013

The number of working at height safety failings making the headlines in the UK this year highlight the importance of having a working at height policy which is strictly adhered to.

Falls from height account for around 3,500* deaths and major injuries in the UK each year and are the most common cause of fatality for UK workers.

In one of several recent cases, a seasonal illuminations company was fined for breaching the Work at Height Regulations 2005, after an employee fell from a ladder and was badly injured. An HSE investigation concluded that the use of a ladder was unnecessary when a safer, more suitable way of working was available – as the company made clear in its own written procedures.

Such cases highlight the need to plan for working at height and ensure that those plans are closely monitored to secure the safety of those involved.
