Environment Agency Warns of Further Flooding

24th January 2014

Communities, particularly in the South East, are being urged by the Environment Agency to stay vigilant ahead of further rainfall expected over the weekend.

At present, there are 10 flood warnings and 91 flood alerts in force mostly across the South of the UK, as further rainfall over the weekend on already saturated ground is expected to worsen conditions and see rivers respond.

High groundwater levels mean there is a continued risk of flooding in many areas such as south Wiltshire, Hampshire, West Berkshire, West Sussex, Surrey and Kent and warnings mean that flooding of property is expected.

The unusual frequency and intensity of rainfall in December 2013 into January 2014 has led to a much more rapid rise in groundwater levels than is usually measured. Groundwater levels are high and still rising and further substantial rainfall is likely to raise groundwater levels even higher and could lead to further flooding.

Peter Quarmby, Regional Duty Manager for the Environment Agency, said:
“We will closely monitor the way rivers respond to the expected rainfall and will issue further warnings if necessary.”
