Queen’s Speech Announces Proposals Requiring Building Owners to Ensure Building Safety Standards and for Environmental Protection

15th October 2019

In yesterday’s Queen’s speech – Monday 14th October – to both Houses of Parliament, plans were announced for legislation to enforce stronger obligations on building owners to comply with stringent new safety standards.  The report from the public enquiry into the fire at Grenfell Tower, in June 2017, is also expected to be published soon highlighting the importance of embedding safety standards in the design and maintenance of high-rise buildings.

Environmental Bill

Furthermore, the Queen’s speech also laid out plans for a new Environment Bill. Measures will look to tackle issues surrounding air and water quality, plastic pollution and restoring plant and wildlife habitats.  A new Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) will be created to oversee this.  This represents the first time that environmental protection issues have featured in a legislative agenda.
