Consultation Open – Manual Handling At Work: A Brief Guide

6th September 2019

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has recently opened a consultation on its updated guidance leaflet regarding manual handling at work.  The guide offers practical advice on how to reduce the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling, and was previously published in 2012.  It has been revised to bring it in line with HSE’s legal guide to regulations (L23) and current ways of working.

Additional advice included

Within the new guidance leaflet, HSE’s intentions have been to improve the way that individuals can distinguish low-risk tasks, which do not need further assessment from those tasks that require a more detailed assessment. This helps to ensure that the appropriate level of assessment is employed.  The leaflet also no longer contains ‘safe lifting tips’, but these are still available on the HSE website.

Review the information for this consultation here, including details of how to participate.  The deadline for responding to the consultation is 24th September 2019.

How can the S2 Partnership help?

An S2 health and safety consultant can be appointed to carry out either specific manual handling assessments for bespoke tasks to be carried out by individual employees, or assessments can be undertaken to determine all generic manual handling activities undertaken by an organisation.  In addition, manual handling training is offered by S2 consultants, which concentrates on employing specific moving and handling techniques, and the effect that manual handling can have on the body.

The S2 Partnership supports a range of clients in managing their health, safety and environmental risks by providing services ranging from assessing, auditing and consultancy through to training and its risk management software, RiskWise.  For further information or assistance, please contact our specialist team
