S2 Partnership Delivers CII Lecture on Fire Risk Management

19th April 2018

On Tuesday 27th March, Bill Tucker, Associate Principal Consultant for the S2 Partnership, presented a lecture to the Chartered Institute of Insurers (CII) members, on ‘Intelligent Fire Risk Management’ at the prestigious Lloyd’s Chambers ‘Old Library, Lime Street, London.

Bill outlined the current approach to managing fire risks in the UK, which has seen a move away from prescriptive legislation, to one based on the assessment of risk. The presentation focused on the responsibilities of property owners and managing agents, and the likelihood of changes to the building regulations and fire regulations following the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower.

The fire safety requirements of Building Regulations in new buildings were discussed along with the challenges of meeting adequate fire safety standards in existing buildings, where a more flexible approach can be applied by fire engineering. Fire safety in the design, management and use of buildings are all therefore equally critical, as well as the importance for building owners and developers to maintain continuity of records, so that surveys can be carried out effectively.

The fire risk assessment should be an integral component of a Fire Safety Management Plan for the building which includes detailed information of the fire safety systems and their maintenance.

During the lecture, members were also given an insight into:

  • The legal imperatives required of owners and occupiers of premises regarding current UK fire safety law;
  • The relationship between risk assessors, enforcers and the insurance industry
  • Joint working with other sectors of the UK fire industry

The presentation was well attended by the CII’s members and guests with feedback from attendees citing the timeliness of this lecture.  If you would like to view a recording of this lecture and the accompanying slides, please click here.
