World Green Building Week – 25th September to 1st October 2017

22nd September 2017

World Green Building Week is an annual event which promotes the ongoing commitment to achieve the ambitious targets set out by the Paris Agreement in December 2015, to ensure that all new buildings must operate at net zero carbon from 2030 and that 100% of buildings (new and existing) must operate at net zero carbon by 2050 – when buildings are net zero they use clean energy, are highly efficient and don’t waste energy.

Currently, buildings are responsible for around 40% of global energy consumption, and nearly 40% of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.  If buildings continue to emit GHGs at this rate, the global temperature is anticipated to rise by more than two degrees this century, and therefore the Paris Agreement is a collaborative effort to “combat climate change and to accelerate and intensify the actions and investments needed for a sustainable low carbon future.”

The World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) believe that green buildings can help combat climate change, as well as achieve numerous other wider social, economic, environmental and health benefits.  Low carbon, green buildings offer significant opportunities in terms of energy reduction, cost savings, job creation and building a more resilient economy.  This year’s campaign has the theme #OurHeroIsZero.
