New statistics highlight that more than £84 million has been awarded in compensation through Diffuse Mesothelioma Payment Scheme

9th February 2017

Official statistics, recently published by the Department for Work and Pensions, show that more than £84 million in compensation has been awarded to sufferers, or the families of those who have died, as part of the Diffuse Mesothelioma Payment Scheme (DMPS).

Diffuse mesothelioma, a cancer linked to asbestos exposure, caused the death of over 2,500 people in Great Britain in 2014, according to Health and Safety Executive figures.  Penny Mordaunt, the Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work, said “It is absolutely right that the government steps in to help people who cannot get the compensation they deserve from their former employers.  I want to ensure all who might benefit from this scheme are aware of it.”

The DMPS was launched in the UK in 2014 and funded by the Insurance Industry, to provide a method for people with the disease, who were negligently exposed to asbestos at work, to claim payment – if they were unable to progress a claim for compensation against their relevant employer or insurer.  The average lump sum payment made through the scheme in the six months between April and September 2016, was around £141,000.
