Almost 1 in 6 Don’t Know Firm’s Energy Spend

14th April 2014

A recent survey of those responsible for energy management within their organisation has revealed that 16% do not know their firm’s energy spend. With 82% of respondents naming energy cost as the largest threat to operations, the headline findings are all the more surprising.

The research, carried out over two years by Europe’s biggest environmental website, edie.net and Sustainable Business publication, surveyed 406 individuals responsible for energy management within their organisation.

The report highlighted that in addition to being the largest threat to operations, energy cost is also the main driver of energy-related decisions.

With organisations striving to increase energy efficiency throughout their operations, the percentage of respondents unaware of their energy spend may seem high, however, it is significantly lower than the 29% who were surveyed in 2012.

Important for numerous reasons – in addition to receiving tax breaks and reducing energy costs – energy efficiency can enhance an organisation’s reputation, improve CSR credentials, and help ensure compliance with energy regulations. Using ISO 14001 can provide assurance that environmental impact is being measured and improved.
