The Carbon Trust Launches International Waste Standard

4th July 2013

Plans to launch the world’s first international standard for waste management have been announced by The Carbon Trust, requiring organisations to certify that they are managing and reducing waste.

Scheduled to launch in late 2013, the new waste standard will oblige organisations to measure, manage, and reduce their solid and hazardous waste.

It is estimated that worldwide around 11.2 billion tonnes of solid waste is collected annually [1], whilst in the UK alone, the waste sector is responsible for 17 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year [2].

According to reports, businesses will need to demonstrate that waste streams are being reduced every year, or being disposed of more effectively to achieve the new standard.
