All UK Listed Companies to Report Greenhouse Gas Emissions

18th June 2013

On 12 June, the UK government confirmed that from 1st October 2013, all UK quoted companies must report on their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as part of their annual report.

The update to the Companies Act 2006 affects all UK incorporated companies listed on the main market of the London Stock Exchange, a European Economic Area market or whose shares are dealing on the New York Stock Exchange or NASDAQ. Whilst non-listed companies and SMEs will initially be outside the scope of the regulations, many may be asked to provide data by larger supply-chain client companies.

Annual reports for financial years ending on or after 30 September 2013 will be required to include greenhouse gas emission data accounting for the full 12-month reporting period.

Benefits cited include encouraging companies to consider ways to improve efficiency, reduce costs and emissions and increase competitiveness as well as improving trust between organisations, their shareholders and the public.

Simultaneously, the government has simplified GHG conversion factors in order to reduce reporting ambiguity.
