New Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Calculation Guidance

14th May 2013

New guidance on the calculation of Scope 3 (value chain) emissions has been released by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol).

The GHG Protocol is the most widely used international accounting tool to understand, quantify, and manage greenhouse gas emissions. This new companion guide to the Scope 3 Standard includes methods for calculating GHG emissions for each of the 15 categories of Scope 3 emissions (e.g. purchased goods and services, transportation and distribution) and guidance on selecting appropriate calculation methods.

Until recently, companies have focussed on measuring emissions from their own operations and electricity consumption using the GHG Protocol’s Scope 1 and Scope 2 frameworks. Understanding Scope 3 emissions allows companies to account for emissions from the entire value chain.
