Unsafe Work at Height – Firm Fined

7th May 2013

Workers operating unsafely at height on a Warwick industrial estate has resulted in a building repair company being fined for breaching the Work at Height Regulations 2005.

The HSE was alerted about how work on roof sheet edges was being carried out, and having visited the site on 7 September 2011, immediately served a Prohibition Notice halting all work until urgent remedial action was taken.

A subsequent investigation uncovered several hazards, most notably no protection being in place to stop workers falling through 24 potentially-fragile roof lights, which had not been identified as safe to work on.

After the hearing, HSE Inspector Paul Thompson said:

“Work at height is a high risk activity. There is a need to adequately plan for such work and ensure those plans are fully implemented and monitored effectively to ensure the safety of those involved.”
