Weather Extremes Highlight the Need to Plan for Our Changing Climate

6th March 2013

Figures published this week by the Environment Agency showed 1 in every 5 days in 2012 saw flooding whilst 1 in every 4 days were in drought.

Lord Smith, Chair of the Environment Agency said: “The extremes of weather we saw last year highlight the urgent need to plan for a changing climate”.

With almost 8,000 properties flooded, and river flows across England and Wales reaching record levels on 48 days last year, the Environment Agency highlighted the need for UK businesses to prepare for extreme weather events to ensure business continuity.

Meanwhile, water scarcity caused by 95 days of drought in 2012 is predicted to be a recurring feature for the UK, as the Environment Agency urged companies to reduce water consumption and improve water storage methods.
