Oxygen Use in the Workplace

8th February 2013

The HSE has issued a new leaflet providing guidance for those using oxygen in the workplace such as in welding, for food preservation or packaging, in chemical plants and steelworks.

This new leaflet describes the hazards and necessary precautions when using oxygen and oxygen equipment. It covers the causes of oxygen fires and explosions, preventing oxygen enrichment and subsequent increased likelihood of fire and fire intensity.

Also detailed is the use of pure oxygen and its potential reaction with common materials such as oil and grease, and the risks from leaking oxygen valves or hoses in poorly ventilated rooms or confined spaces. This information is vital for employers in environments where oxygen is used, and provides useful advice and guidance in managing the risks – visit www.hse.gov.uk for a downloadable copy.
