Pollution incidents at all time low, but ‘no room for complacency’ warns the Environment Agency

2nd November 2012

Figures announced yesterday by the Environment Agency show serious industrial pollution incidents have fallen to their lowest level for over a decade, whilst pollution incidents in the water and waste sectors, the largest permitted sectors, almost doubled last year – from 65 to 120.

Lord Smith commented: “…the vast majority of regulated businesses have a good record on environmental performance and take their environmental responsibilities seriously. However a minority of businesses are still bad neighbours, causing complaints from local communities”.

The Sustainable Business Report also showed that business has produced less waste, and that more of it is beneficially re-used, whilst regulation has led to major reductions in emissions to air.
