Fire door safety week – fire doors save lives

21st September 2017

The Fire Door Safety Week runs from 25th September to 1st October. The focus for this year’s campaign, is to promote valuable advice and resources to boost fire safety in shared and high rise accommodation.  The campaign recommends a five-step approach to ensuring the safety of any fire door (in addition to the specific documentation for the door): check for certification; check the gaps; check the seals; check the hinges and check the door closes properly. Following the tragedy at Grenfell Tower, Fire Door Safety Week has even greater resonance this year for building owners, landlords and occupiers. The British Woodworking Federation, who are responsible for Fire Door Safety Week, highlight that despite this fact, fire doors remain a significant area of neglect, and are often an area that can be downgraded on a specification, not maintained properly and are frequently left propped open.

Working fire doors are crucial to the health and safety of residents, especially where users of buildings may need to ‘stay put’ until rescued by the fire service. Consequently, Fire Door Safety Week strives to engage and educate people, helping every property owner to understand the correct specification, supply, installation, operation, inspection and maintenance of their fire doors.
