HSE Asbestos Campaign – Do you recognise the risks?

30th October 2014

Asbestos continues to be a significant cause of workplace health related illnesses with an average of 20 tradespeople dying every week from asbestos related diseases.

The HSE have launched a new asbestos safety campaign to try and raise awareness of the issue. A recent survey completed by the HSE identified poor knowledge and shocking myths by those who are at risk.

  • One in seven (14 per cent) believing that drinking a glass of water will help protect them from the deadly dust
  • One in four (27 per cent) thinking that opening a window will help to keep them safe
  • Only a third (30 per cent) of those asked, were able to identify all the correct measures for safe asbestos working
  • Over half (57 per cent) made at least one potentially lethal mistake in trying to identify how to stay safe

The S2 Partnership delivers a range of Asbestos services to ensure compliance and protect health. In particular, Asbestos Awareness training delivered by our specialist consultants informs of the dangers of asbestos, where asbestos can be found, and how to effectively manage the surveying, removal and encapsulation of asbestos. In addition, the course provides all the necessary information to help keep individuals and others protected from exposure to ‘The Hidden Killer’ through an understanding of types of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) commonly found, and guidance on what to do if encountered.
